TIME MAGAZINE CONFIRMS U.S. MAY BE CHANGING SIDES IN IRAQ
Last week I linked an Asia Times article reporting U.S arms shipments to Iraqi insurgents, in the hopes of hindering the expected new pro-Iranian government [*]. This TIME magazine article provides the cover of "opening a dialogue" with the insurgents. It's one hell of an exit strategy, and shows what a disaster getting rid of Saddam was:
...the U.S. officer presses the Iraqi for names of other insurgent leaders; the Iraqi says the newly elected Shi'a-dominated government is being controlled by Iran. The discussion does not go beyond generalities, but both sides know what's behind the coded language. The Iraqi's very presence conveys a message: Members of the insurgency are open to negotiating an end to their struggle with the U.S. "We are ready," he says before leaving, "to work with you." ...While U.S. officials would not confirm the details of any specific meetings, sources in Washington told TIME that for the first time the U.S. is in direct contact with members of the Sunni insurgency... [*]
W's dad refused to topple Saddam for the very good reason that it would have strengthened Iran immeasurably. But the fantasists in current Administration believe in miracles that somehow always just turn out right.
That not being the case, it's now time for some dirty dealing, another BushCo trademark.
BTW: If you read the next article, you can see the war on the ground is going on as usual. Even though the spooks know we are changing sides, we can't let the boys on the front know. That's operational security after all. It's too bad because now their deaths are doubly in vain.

Looks like they're right on track if the goal is to reduce Iraq to a number of ethnically and sect-based statelets. Divide and rule. Smaller, competing nation-states are easier for the oil companies to bargain with.
It has always been comical to see the US trumpet its own multiculturalism while adopting the ethnic/religious gerrymander as a solution for everyone else from Bosnia to Rwanda and now to Iraq.

Deranged from any moral sense, but typical US behavior. Another reason we are so widely loved.
