Cosmic Iguana - Voice of the Evil Doers

As July 4th rolls around, the Iguana is feeling pretty all-American having sat through the Mt Shasta July 4th parade - which was fairly lame this year, missing some of its most precious parts- the every Corvette owner in town contingent, the town's beer trucks (always a local favorite), and the Teens Against Abortion (most of them apparently were pregnant this year). Anyway it got me thinking about Patriotic Things like, say, NASCAR racing. And then I started wondering...

What ever happened to the NASCAR dads? You know the demographic that was supposed to be replacing the soccer moms as the KEY demographic for this election year?

It always struck me as strange that it would be a key swing demographic since white lower-middle class males have been a bastion of Republicanism since Reagan stood near the graves of civil rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1980 and told his whites only crowd to "Take Back America" [*]. In fact, I am REALLY curious about that demographic since Dale Earnhardt told everyone to see F9-11 last week.

BUT... what do you know, the vital NASCAR demographic has apparently vanished like the wind.

In fact, it has vanished so completely that I wonder if it wasn't a fiction, maybe concocted by Karl Rove to counteract Bush's weakness with the soccer moms, a real swing group that he was in trouble with.

Doing a quick Google search on NASCAR Dads [*], it appears that my conspiracy theory is too weak . There is barely a single mention of NASCAR dads after Bush's much ballyhooed visit to Daytona [*], his first visit since the last election.

It appears to me that the entire NASCAR dad "swing group" was an invention, leading up to and promoting Bush's Daytona visit, and it was swallowed hook, line and sinker by the media. Pathetic...
